There are multiple surgical procedures done at Valley West. For each procedure, we recommend pre-anesthetic blood work, a catheter and IV fluids. These items are required on all our patients that are 7 years of age and older.
We use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment in addition to having our trained technical staff manually monitoring your pet as well. This helps ensure the safety of your pet while under anesthesia and post operatively.
Premedication is giving to relieve stress, anxiety, reduce amount of general anesthesia needed and provide pain control. We also give a second post-surgical injection of pain medication to keep your pet as comfortable as possible after their surgery.
Most dogs and some cats are sent home with E-collars to prevent them from traumatizing their surgical site and chewing out sutures. Remember that as the incision starts to heal, it becomes itchy. Your pet will want to lick and chew at it, so keep the E-collar in place until it is completely healed.
Signs of trauma to the surgery site include; moist, red, raised skin around incision site; swollen, red skin and raw oozing incision with missing sutures.
Finally, we send home a post-surgical home instruction sheet that includes all medication instructions as well as what to expect for a few days following surgery. It also gives you instructions on how to proceed with feeding and exercise, incision and, if applicable, bandage care.
